The Amazing Gadgets You’ll Have in 2020
Today there are some pretty cool gadgets out there which can satisfy even the nerdiest nerd. Still though, while these gadgets area undoubtedly wicked, it’s the fair to say that they’re only going to get better as time goes on and as technology improves. If you look at the improvement between the Nokia 3210, once the shining beacon of phoney goodness, compared to the iPhone today, then it’s fair to say that there’s been a fair improvement. But bearing in mind that most improvement is actually exponential (meaning that the gap gets bigger with each improvement) it’s likely that in the next ten years we’re likely to see an even bigger jump in quality.
So bearing all this in mind, what kinds of incredible devices are we likely to be carrying around come 2020? Here we’ll have a look at some of the things you might expect.
Smart Objects: The ‘internet of things’ is a popular buzzword at the moment which looks at the likelihood of us seeing connectivity in the vast majority of objects. For instance you might see sprinkler systems connected to the web, which would then enable them to know when to water the garden based on the weather report – knowing not only what the weather is like currently, but also the forecast for the rest of the week. As internet connections become ubiquitous and free it’s likely loads of things are going to be going online.
Cloud Devices: The cloud basically means the web as used for storage. If something is ‘on the cloud’ then that basically means it’s stored on one or even several servers so that it’s not filling up your harddrive or slowing down your computer. Currently we can download lots of things from the cloud, but eventually as servers become more powerful and connections faster, we won’t even need to download them and will be able to interface with the software without even going online to do so. Essentially think ‘Crysis 2 as web app’. Because the software will be running on the server that then also means that you won’t need a highly powerful device in order to use it – just something that can send and receive messages to and from the servers. Imagine a time then when you have a slim and light device at a disposable price, that allows you to run the very latest games and store infinite music files, or that gives you access to your home computer and everything on it wherever you are. It’s not that far off.
Augmented Reality Devices: Google Goggles might make you laugh now, but that probably is the future – devices that overlay digital information over the top of real world images and sound. And it won’t just be in glasses either – it will be on shop windows and it will be on your car window like a futuristic HUD.
Electric Cars: Right now electric cars are a bit of a pipe dream. However they are going to take off eventually – because they are better for the environment, for our wallets and for just about everyone. The fact that the government is pushing them so hard also means we are almost guaranteed to see them take off eventually.
